The Preferred Source Move Most Vancouver Businesses Have Never Heard Of in 2026

Google now lets readers pick your site as a preferred source in AI Mode. I use this move on every client. Here's what it does and who it actually works for.

The Preferred Source Move Most Vancouver Businesses Have Never Heard Of in 2026

A prospect asked me last month what one thing separates the sites getting cited in AI Mode from the ones that don't. I gave him an answer that surprised him. It wasn't schema. It wasn't Reddit. It was a small toggle inside Google that almost no one has told their clients about.

Google's preferred sources feature lets a reader mark your site as a source they trust. When they do, Google is more likely to surface you inside AI Overviews and AI Mode for that reader, and a small "preferred" badge can appear next to your name in Top Stories. It's live, it's under-used, and it's one of the highest-leverage things a local business can ask its existing customers to do in 2026.

I'll explain what it actually is, who it moves the needle for, and the exact conversation I have with clients about deploying it. Then I'll tell you when it's a waste of time, because it often is.

What the preferred sources move actually does

Inside Google Search, a reader can open the top-right menu and add specific websites to their preferred sources list. Google then weights those sources more heavily when generating AI answers for that user, and shows a badge in Top Stories where relevant. Google confirmed the rollout in August 2025 and expanded it into AI Mode through 2026 (Google, 2025).

Two things make this interesting for a local business owner.

The first is that it's a per-user signal. It doesn't require you to outrank anyone. If 200 of your customers add your site as a preferred source, you become the default answer for 200 people the next time they ask Google or AI Mode a question in your category. That's a compounding audience you own, not rent.

The second is that it's operationally simple. You already ask customers for a Google review. You can ask them for this in the same breath. The lift is a few taps.

Why I put this near the top of the trust layer

The 66th's framework has three layers: foundation, trust, authority. Preferred sources sit inside the trust layer, alongside review velocity and social presence. That order matters. If a business's site can't be indexed or its pages are thin, no amount of "add us as a preferred source" will save the AI-search story. I've watched founders skip the foundation and reach for the shiny signal at the top. It doesn't work.

The reason preferred sources sits above things like schema and Wikidata edits on my leverage list is that it does two jobs at once. It creates a personal-search advantage for every customer who takes 4 seconds to add you, and it produces a badge that other people see when they hit Top Stories. It's the closest thing Google has built to a public "vouch" mechanism.

Who this actually moves the needle for

Not everyone. I've stopped pitching universal AI-search tactics because I keep watching them fail in categories they were never suited to. Here's the honest breakdown.

Business typeDoes preferred sources move revenue? Why
Recurring-visit local (wellness studio, dentist, salon)Yes, high leverageYou see the same customers monthly. Each visit is a chance to ask. The audience compounds.
One-time-purchase local (funeral home, roofing)Low leverageYou rarely see the same buyer twice. The signal doesn't stack.
DTC ecommerce with a subscriber baseYes, moderate leverageNewsletter and post-purchase email flows are natural asks.
B2B SaaS with named accountsLow leverageBuyers rarely search your category from a personal Google account.
Restaurant / cafe with regularsYes, moderate leverageRepeat customers are the whole model. The ask fits on receipts and menus.

The pattern: preferred sources rewards businesses whose customers come back. A recurring-visit business that puts the ask in the check-out flow will accumulate hundreds of preferred-source adds in a year. A one-time-purchase business won't.

The proof I actually have

I want to be careful here, because the honest answer is I can't cleanly isolate preferred sources from the rest of the trust layer in any client's data. What I can say is this.

Across the 66th roster we've been layering preferred-source asks into review-request workflows since Google rolled it into AI Mode. The clients where AI-search revenue has moved most visibly are the ones with the highest review velocity and the most active customer relationships. That includes an AI video platform where AI-search revenue grew 354% in 4 months, and a DTC food brand where AI citations grew 3,300% over 18 months. Both had aggressive review acquisition running alongside every other trust-layer move, including this one.

I'm not going to tell you preferred sources caused those results. The foundation caused them. Preferred sources compounds them.

The exact ask I give clients

The best time to make the ask is when the customer is already reaching for their phone. Right after a positive interaction. Bundled with the review request, not replacing it. Something like:

"If you have 30 seconds, tap the three dots at the top of a Google search, hit preferred sources, and add our site. It means when you or your friends ask Google or AI a question about [category], we'll show up first for you. Takes 4 taps."

You do NOT put this on a printed sign that says "add us to your preferred sources for better SEO." Users don't care about your SEO. They care about the outcome for them, which is faster and more relevant answers when they search your category.

Where I'd tell you to spend the effort instead

If you don't have full-funnel content on your site, if your service pages are thin, if your Google Business Profile is only half-filled out, if you're not asking for reviews in a systematic way, do those things first. Preferred sources is a compounder on top of a working foundation. It's not a substitute for one.

The GEO work we do bundles this move into every retainer, because it's part of the trust layer and the trust layer is included by default. It's not a separate line item. It shouldn't be one at your agency either, if they're pitching it that way.

The takeaway

Google gave local businesses a lever that lets their existing customers vote them up in AI search, and almost nobody is using it. The businesses that ask for it consistently, and only after their foundation is right, will look up in 12 months and find themselves cited by name in the answers their prospects are already asking AI to generate. The ones who ignore it will keep watching the same 3 competitors appear in every response.

Ask your customers. Bundle it with the review request. Make sure your site can actually be read first. The move is small. The compounding isn't.
