What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that Google shows on some search results pages, with links to web pages that support the summary. Google shows one only when its systems judge that it adds something to the regular results.

How AI Overviews work
When someone searches, Google first decides whether a summary would help. If it would, Google's systems may run several related searches across subtopics, a technique Google calls query fan-out, then write a short answer and link the pages that support it. Google says this lets an AI Overview show a wider and more varied set of links than a classic results page.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. The search | "How often should I replace my furnace filter?" |
| 2. The decision | Google judges that a summary adds to the regular results, so it builds one |
| 3. Related searches | It may also search filter types, home size and pets |
| 4. The answer | A short summary appears with links to the pages that support it |
Why Google built them
Google began rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the U.S. on May 14, 2024, and said at launch that links inside AI Overviews get more clicks than the same page would get as a regular result for that search.
Google's guide to AI features says AI Overviews help people get the gist of a complicated topic and give them a jumping off point to explore links. It also says that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning people are more likely to spend more time on the site.
What it means for your business
To be linked from an AI Overview, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements and no special markup or AI text files to add. The site must also stay included in Search Console's Search generative AI control, which is on by default. The page has to rank and answer the question well, which is SEO.
In Search Console, Google counts a click on a link in an AI Overview as a click, and every link in the overview shares the overview's single position on the page.
AI Overviews matter for the questions buyers ask while researching, such as costs, comparisons and how a service works. They matter less for searches where Google shows none. Getting a business linked in these answers is part of our generative engine optimization service.
Common mistakes
- Adding special markup or an AI text file to get into AI Overviews. Google says neither is needed.
- Reading position 1 in Search Console as a top regular ranking. Google gives every link in an AI Overview the overview's single position, so position 1 can mean a link inside the overview.
- Expecting an AI Overview on every search. Google shows one only when its systems judge it adds to classic results, so it does not appear on every search.
