What is an AI citation?

An AI citation is a link that an AI answer, such as a Google AI Overview or a ChatGPT search response, shows as the source of something it said. A cited page can earn a visit from the person reading the answer.

How AI citations work

An AI tool with web search does not answer from memory alone. It runs searches, reads the pages that come back, writes an answer, and attaches links to pages that support what it says. Those links are the citations.

A citation is different from a mention. A mention names your business in the text. A citation links to a page, which can be yours or a page about you, such as a review site or a news story.

Replacing a water heater in Calgary takes most plumbers half a day.example.com/water-heater-replacement-calgary/
Some plumbers offer same-day emergency service across the city.example.com/emergency-plumber/
Customers rate several local plumbers highly for clear pricing.A review site's Calgary plumbers list

Where AI citations show up

Google's guide to generative AI features in Search says AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve pages from Google's Search index and show prominent, clickable links to the pages that support the response. The same guide says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before Google can use it this way.

ChatGPT cites pages in its search answers too. OpenAI's crawler documentation says its OAI-SearchBot crawler surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search results, and sites that block it do not appear in ChatGPT search answers, apart from plain navigational links.

What it means for your business

A citation puts your page in front of a buyer at the moment they are researching your service, and the link gives them a path to your site. It matters for services people compare before they buy, where an AI answer lists options and sources. It matters less for searches where Google shows no AI answer at all.

Google now reports part of this. Its Generative AI performance report in Search Console counts how often URLs from your site appeared in AI features on Google Search and Discover, by page, country, device and date. Other AI tools do not appear in that report, so you have to ask them directly. Earning citations across those tools is the work of our generative engine optimization service.

Common mistakes

  • Counting mentions as citations. Track them apart, because only a citation carries a link a buyer can follow.
  • Blocking the search crawlers AI tools use in robots.txt, the file that tells bots which pages they may read. A page the tool cannot read cannot be cited.
  • Putting prices, service areas or results only in images or PDFs. AI tools quote the text they can read on the page.
